I was up in Potter Co. the last few days and was excited with the amount of grouse chicks that were seen. Had 3 different groups of grouse, 1 had about 5-7 chicks, 2nd had about 6-8 chicks and the 3rd had at least 10 and maybe a few more. I looked for a second female in the last group but didnt see any as they were all out on an ATV trail dusting themselves. All of the birds flew very well and were of good size so it seems the hatch was good on my land. Plenty of apples on the apple and thornapple trees and the Beech Trees seem to be loaded up also compared to the last 4-5 years. Wild Blueberrys looked good and ripe so the little brown flying rockets should have a good summer. All of my habitat work is really paying off. I wont even mention the 3 bucks I saw. All I can say is O.M.G
I hunt potter for bear near conrad and kicked out 10 different grouse on one drive on the top of the mountain. Made me think to try some grouse hunting on the friday before bear. But I dont think taking my "Black Lab" out up there that close to the season is a great idea.
