Hatches??

I have seen several hen turkeys out on edges and in the open without poults in the last few days. Got the glasses on one and she had no chicks with her. Anyone else seeing chicks or was it just a bad wet and cold spring? Pheasants, grouse??

Re: Hatches??

My son and I have seen a few turkey poults while doing some habitat work.We also heard some pretty good rooster crowing, although we haven't seen any pheasant chicks yet. There was a grouse nest on my property but it was unsuccessful.I know it was a cold wet spring but I am not sure what effect it has had.

It's breeding,training...and something unknown.

Re: Hatches??

We have heard of one brood last week and they were only days old. We suspect nesting to be two weeks or more behind. This was also noticed by one of our members who raises pheasants and noticed they were a couple of weeks later than usual.

Re: Hatches??

My brother saw 15 grouse chicks and about 5 adult grouse up near Bradford last weekend.

The deer didn't disappear.... the 250,000 guys who used to walk around and make the deer move did.

Re: Hatches??

Research conducted during the ACGRP found that hen health going into late winter was more of a factor in chick survival that spring than weather.

Personally, I am not worried about this year's grouse hatch, or woodcock for that matter.

Re: Hatches??

Out on a gamelands today and saw a gobbler strutting for 4 hens, another gobbler feeding in a field and a hen with 8 or 9 poults that could fly already. They were 6 or 7 inches tall.

Re: Hatches??

I haven't seen any poults yet. Today I spotted 1 hen all by herself, then a mile or so down the road I saw another hen with 3 longbeards. I did see about 8 young grouse last week with their mother and a few days before that I walked up on another grouse sitting on a nest of 12 eggs.

I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.

Re: Hatches??

I have a hen with 8 poults frequenting our yard almost daily.

Another day in paradise. God hunts on Sundays.

Re: Hatches??

Saw a grouse with a couple youn'uns and not far from that two long beard turkeys in full strut head to head about a foot apart. Don'y know what that means and wouldn't speculate on a family channel.
