Predator proof johnny house

I need some help trying to make my johnny house more predator proof. I have a recall funnel at the base with a door to cover the funnel up at night. The problem is if I get to the johnny house too late one time a mink or weasel might get in and take out my quail. I had this happen over the winter. I got to the johnny house a little after sunset and something got in and killed all my birds. Is there some kind of spring loaded recall funnel or do I need to think about moving the location of the funnel?

Re: Predator proof johnny house

bwire,
If there is any way to keep predators ot of a call pen while allowing the birds to get back in I have never found it. What I do is to keep a live trap, like a Hav A Heart, next to the pen. When I'm not actively recalling the birds I always keep the trap set and throw in a bit of the bird feed. I call this a pre emptive strike. It gets the predators before they get my birds. It also gives me the option of the relocating a critter that I don't want to harm.

If you HAVE to have your birds working as I do then I've found it necesary to maintain several pens in several locations. The chances of something getting all of them at the same time is pretty rare.

I do think that you have to accept some losses. Also, my live trap scenario does nothing for avian predators. As far as I know there is no legal option for dealing with them. Again, you have to accept some losses. If you want to talk at length about how I use the live traps just get my phone number off my website and call me some evening after dark.

We also keep a woven wire fence around them to keep the larger critters out. About 3 feet larger than the pen. I agree with Tom and not much you can do about the featered killers. Watch out for the crows!! Once crows learn to hunt quail they are deadly. The crows can be shot though but boy are they smart!!

Thanks for the other tips. I'll have to see what I can work out.

Here's another one but it's three times the price.
