hunting squirrels/best results?

is it better to stalk and walk or sit for the buggers. took son out last year and walked till my legs fell off and nothin? how many guys actually call for em. some help would be great since gettin a kid involved is already challenging then throw in the element of failure and patience. LORD HELP ME, LOL

I like to walk real slow, and look for them moving through the tree tops, then sit and wait for them to present a shot. Then I move on too the next one.

If you've got a kid with you, it's really important you find a den tree with active squirrels. Look for knots, holes, and nests. Also look for scraps of acorns and shells below where the perched and fed. If you get a good den tree that has 2-3 in it, you're in for a fun time. First hour and last hour of light will have them out.

As far as sneaking for squirrels you really can't just walk. Gotta go slow and as quietly as possible. Stop frequently and unfocus your eyes in the treetops and ground and any movement will grab your attention. Sneaking for squirrels is a ton of fun when you can pick out the ears of one in a Y that thinks he has you beat. Still...find a den and find a good spot around 25 - 30 yards away and relax. They'll be out.

Re: hunting squirrels/best results?

I let the squirrels decide for me. Some seasons they are spookier than others. My favorite method is walking slowly and covering ground but if I'm not seeing any then that tells me its time for me to find a likely spot hide myself and wait for them to show themselves.

I like still hunting them. But not against plopping down and sitting for an hour or so during the hunt. Depends on the area and conditions.

Another day in paradise. God hunts on Sundays.

By far the best way is to get a squirrel dog. You will find many more squirrels and enjoy watching the dog work. After awhile the number of squirrels won't matter much but the watching and listening to the dog tree them will excite you much more.

I prefer to stand hunt them,I almost always have more luck just sitting and waiting than i do walking around slowly but either way is fun

Re: hunting squirrels/best results?

I have squirrel dogs and that is the best way to hunt them. Second best is to find a spot that has a lot of squirrels and wait. When you walk hunt most of them will be flat against a tree and believe me they sure can hide.

You canít get them if you ainít in the woods!!

Re: hunting squirrels/best results?

We were used to target squirrels my uncle had a couple spots near his house, we would go early morning and sit down on small over look and they would come out and feed after sitting for about a 1/2 hour. We would shoot one or two and wait another 1/2 hour and they would be back out. Now unless I go sit in my tree stand scouting for deer season, we just walk around and hope we run into one or other small game everyone once in a while.
