quail pen

Does anyone have any plans for a quail pen? I have been searching the internet and they make you pay for them. I have an idea how to make one but just curious of ideas!

Re: quail pen

I know you don't want to pay for plans but Lion Country Supply had plans for nice johnny houses for $6.50.

Re: quail pen

Go to your local library and look through the hunting dog training books, I have seen plans in there.
Good luck

Re: quail pen

I used to make them all the time. You simply cut the quill on an angle at the tip and then split the quill about half an inch up ftom the point. This split acts as a resivoir for the ink and absorbs it through capillary action. BTW - the term "Pen Knife" had its genesis in that people carried a small knift that was used to "sharpen" the quill pens by cutting a new angel when the pen point got dull or was broken. Hint: althougy it looks cool to have a full feather, it's best to cut off the end as this makes the quill pen easier to handle. Better ballance and all that sort of thing.

Good night Chesty, wherever you are......

Re: quail pen

Hey JD, he wants to build a quail pen, not a quill pen.

Re: quail pen

I can't help with plans but here is a picture of a johnny house that I built. Its 4' x 4' and about 6' high. I use it for chukars but quail would recall just fine to it. If you are ever over in the Bloomsburg area or traveling east on I 80 stop in and I'll give you an in person look. I'm just 5 minutes off the interstate.
