First time seeing "The King" in all his glory

While archery hunting on Friday, I saw one of the most beautiful sights ive ever seen in the woods. I heard some leaves crunching behind me, and got excited with anticipation that a buck would be coming in.

I turned around to see my greatest advisory in all of his glory strutting around about 15 yards away. He was truly a big bird with a very large fan. It was neat to see his ruff shimmering, and tail fan moving back and fourth. I could hear him making some bubbly clucking sounds as well. I was so pumped to finally see this. He did look proud as could be in his little patch of recovering fenced in area on the state gamelands I was hunting. As if he thought he was the king of that area.

I am actually excited daylight savings time came in as it may give me enough time for a quick grouse hunt before work. I just need to get one of these guys already, but with the rut being on I think I may be glued to a tree for the next week or so.

I hear ya , sitting in the stand last night I saw 3 grouse at different times just walking around me , then I saw a small buck right on the tail of a doe , after they were done running around it pretty much died down and started to darken, so I got down and started walking home and right in the middle of the quad trail a kicked up an awesome looking grouse saw his fan as he flew and the way the feathers stuck out , so I hate this , it's so hard to choose the shotgun or the bow

I am sticking with the bow for now until I get a buck. Grouse is in until the end of January so you have time. I like late season hunting better anyway. Wait til you give it a go and can see their tracks and such in the snow. It gives you a better idea of where they spend their time as well.

Oops, I saw the word "king" in the title and thought it was a pheasant story
