About my new small game shotgun...

So I said last month I was getting the ATI Cavalry SX 12 ga. Well, I picked it up Saturday, took it out, cleaned it up, and went hunting! First I would like to say that this gun is IMPOSSIBLY light! I could not believe how light it was. Five chokes. I swapped the cylinder / imp. cylinder for imp. cylinder / modified.

When I got to the field I accidentally put a high brass shell in the bottom barrel (which I have set to go first.) I ran across a squirrel almost immediately about 35 yds away. Easy kill. Moved spots and got on some birds. Put up two birds at pretty close range. Dead on with the first bird, second bird I kinda whacked a tree. The gun shouldered beautifully and felt like it was exactly where I wanted it from the moment I brought it up.

Also accidentally tested durability jumping on a log. Trying to bounce a rabbit, I dropped the gun over my shoulder. It landed safe and sound, no scratches.

Out of the three shots I took there was almost no recoil to speak of. This gun is a clear winner for low-cost field gun in my book! I didn't take any field pictures, but here is one of my post-hunt meal (since that seems a popular theme )

Re: About my new small game shotgun...

I was looking at those last summer before I bought my Browning. As I already had one cheap 12 I thought it was superfluous to buy another. Otherwise, I thought the same as you, that for a $5-600 gun it was kinda nice. But then again most of these Turkish guns are.

I bought an Escort Magnum in 20ga when I was looking at O/U's. I finally got a chance to shoot it last weekend. I was shocked how fast that thing cycles. That would be another to chalk up to the "cheap but worth it" column.

Sorry for kinda hijacking your thread.

Remember, shoot straight and shoot often.
Good... Bad... I'm the guy with the gun.

Re: About my new small game shotgun...

Yeah at first the durability test made me want to cry, until I realized that everything was ok. Then it was an LOL moment, and I'm pretty sure I heard the dog chuckling in the brush as well. We should make a cheap but good thread, and no worries on hijacking

you guys have gotta go to the pistols. I can count on one hand the amount of times I carry a long gun in the field, and that's counting deer season. That's how much fun it is.

Re: About my new small game shotgun...

I've thought about it. I carry a pistol in regular deer season when I have doe tags. I just don't know if I want to do it for small game or not. Well, I should say I don't know if I want to spend the money right now. That's my real issue I suppose.
