A look at my records, shows for the first 4 hunts of the previous 4 years my flush per hour was between 2.8 and 3.8 birds per hour.
This year I'm moving 1.2 birds per hour in early season. Same area, similar habitat. I hope I'm wrong, but it seems like most of the birds have vanished. As an avid Grouse hunter, this had me a bit concerned.
Somebody tell me they are moving lots of birds, because I need some good news.
I've been seeing a lot of young birds. I have only been out a half day. the first spot put up two birds wild flushes. Second spot saw three birds. Shot at two and got one. I'm pretty optimistic it will be a good year.
If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy JM
First saturday was great grouse and woodcock. Seconds day was terrible to hot to dry to loud to early and deer drives in the area I was to hunt. Have to check weather for this weekend and adjust to dry hot weather but the numbers were great in the areas the first day that usually produce.
I put out several just moseying around looking for deer sign and early flintlock, so did several other guys, saw 3 on the road one day another one the next, seems normal to my area of s.f. as last several years.
Anybody can shoot deer on the farm ground....You earn it in the mountains.......
Hunted two Saturdays in the ANF, beautiful cover, flushed a total of 6 birds behind two hard working dogs. I could blame the dogs if we were getting wild flushes or something, but that's a total of the birds we put up or heard flushing. We got so disgusted Saturday we packed up and shot some ditch chickens instead.
