Early versus late season grouse?

Last late season we was putting up about 12-15 plus grouse in 4 hours. This season so far had 4 in counters in 5 hours. Should I be hunting in different areas? I am hunting in the morning. Maybe switch to the afternoon? This is my second season grouse hunting. Towards the end of last season I thought I had them figured out. Not even close.

With the 4 in 5 hours I'd say a different area. Kinda kidding on that. It depends all on food and cover. There is food and šover everywhere in the woods right now so birds can be scattered. Look for any transition in covers and hunt the edges of logroads, hilltops, fields and woods plus at the bottom of slopes. It takes a couple seasons to pattern there cover at times of year. You will get to the point you can't pass up a transition in cover cause you know a bird must be hiding in it. Good luck and many miles to you.

On the note about times of day that depends on if its real cold they may stay on the roost longer but I wouldn't hunt the first crack of daylight I start about 1 to 2 hours after daylight so they start feeding. Sometimes midday gets to dry and they are gone before you get there

Re: Early versus late season grouse?

I was focusing on more in the thick nasty stuff. I will try to walk the edges this weekend. Thanks.

Don't get too down, I've been finding birds stacked up still... be it remaining grouped broods, focused on a food source or both. This makes it feast or famine really, no birds for long stretches giving you a zero/hour average and then you put 10 up in an acre area or a half dozen under/off one tree. Keep at it, good luck.

If guns cause crime, mine must be broken.
