Got the quail pen just about wrapped up

Work has been crushing me lately but I got the quail pen just about wrapped up. I have a few more things to add to predator proof it but it will hold birds and they are coming today. Going with quail and a few chucker. Will be putting some chucker out on Sunday if all goes well.

I will put up better pics once I get home, but here was the finished pic I took last night around 12. Then pen will be a bit crowded for a few weeks, but once quail come in, it will get thinned out pretty good. Hoping a few of them make it and live to be honest. I did not put a recall pen in there for this year but may in the future. It will just be a small divder at the bottom with a predator proof entry.

This was a fun build that took way to long. I will be doubling up the boards that are exposed and the wire is cut, to make it predator proof. I have to put a lock on both doors. It wont win any contest, but will keep birds and allow me to keep the dog on birds year round.

More pics to come once I get home.

Looks good. I have a couple of suggestions that I learned the hard way. You may want to use wire cloth (1/4 inch) on the sides instead of chicken wire. Raccoons can reach in and pull birds apart. They will do the same thing from the bottom, too. One other thing would be to put the food and water at opposite ends of the pen with a divider for them to fly over. It helps them become better flyers. Good luck and have fun.

Thanks, The bottom is 14/" ovals with chicken wire underneath. I may look at overlapping the 14" wire on the sides as well. Just had to get it done as the birds are coming today.

This guy blew out of the side door hitting me in the face and flew about 100 yards with Lilly in tow. She found him and flushed him back to about 10 yards of me. We had a foot race and Lilly chomped him. She did it with a soft mouth thogh and he is fine.

Here are a few of the birds in the pen. Still have a while before we can actually hunt over them, Lilly is definitely helping them work their wing muscles

Mike,
Do you have the chukar and quail in the same pen? Be leery if you do. The chukar are cannibals and will pick on smaller weaker members of their own kind and won't think twice about killing the quail especially with Lilly checking them out bc that will stress out both the quail and chukar. Just a little food for thought.

Only the owners of a GSP would truly understand, "If I fits, I sits".

I was going to say that as well.. you may wake up one morning and have 1 chukar left because it killed all the others.. that's what the guy at the game farm told me as well as per keeping them for extended periods of time

The uncommon man is merely the common man thinking and dreaming of success in larger terms

Re: Got the quail pen just about wrapped up

They won't last that long. Hoping to take a couple out this weekend, on Sunday. So far there is no evidence of any pecking, and they actually lay together a lot, side by side. I do think the chucker a bit smarter bird as they walk along the edges of the pen and try to figure out a way to escape.

Hey Mike, If you notice a lot of crap in that food and water feeder try cutting 3x3 holes in the sides of a 1 gal milk jug. I had those same feeders and there was always crap in them.
