Dove season- hunting times?

Okay, I was pretty sure that for the first part of the season (Sept. 1-25) hunting hours were from noon until sunset. But I've seen and heard people out shooting doves on the public land near me in the morning. Confused, I looked thru the digest again last night and couldn't find anything about that noon to sunset times. Only thing I see is clearly on page 28, first sentence says: Migratory birds (waterfowl, DOVES, woodcock, snipe, rail, gallinules) may be hunted from one half-hour before sunrise until sunset.

So what are the start times for dove hunting?

Noon. Goose season is in. could they be hunting geese. possibly crow?

Take a man hunting, feed him for a day. Teach him to hunt, feed him for a lifetime !!!!

Thanks for the info. What page is this on in the digest? I know I've read it before but I can't find it for the life of me. I don't remember seeing anything that said "webless migratory birds." If you look up Migratory Birds or Doves in the table of contents in the digest, none of the pages listed have this info on them.

I tried consulting the website and clicked on the migratory bird infirmation link. It takes you to the PA Portal and you have to sign in. I was at work and didn't want to sign in. Totally ridiculous to me to have to sign in for this information. But then again, it's Harrisburg and ridiculous is their MO. Lol.

I did just notice on page 14 a mention of the September portion of Dove season being noon to sunset.

Re: Dove season- hunting times?

Won't ever be in the digest as the digest comes out in print prior to the finalizing of the migratory seasons.

The migratory brochure comes out in mid August FYI

Re: Dove season- hunting times?

Thanks guys. I knew I had read it and I knew the migratory bird guide came out later but I reading the times in the digest threw me off.

Anybody know why the September segment always has the noon daily start? Is it just old tradition?

Re: Dove season- hunting times?

I seem to recall John telling someone it had to do with us getting a longer season in days afield by limiting the first month to half day.. something like that to fit in with the USFWS parameters for seasons

Re: Dove season- hunting times?

In 1999, the daily dove season hunting hours in Pennsylvania were from a half-hour before sunrise to sunset. This was true during all three of the triple split seasons:
Sept. 1 - Oct. 5; Oct. 30 - Nov. 27, and Dec. 27 - Jan. 1.

1999 was the first year of the triple split (with a season after Christmas).

From 2000 on, the triple split format was kept, but the "early" season returned to the traditional Noon start time.

The reason given for having a noon start time was to avoid conflicts between goose hunters and dove hunters. (Apparently goose hunting takes preference).

Re: Dove season- hunting times?

yes..but, don't you see the additional days?

1999 Sept 1 thru Oct 5 then closed to Oct 30th

with the noon opener Sept 1 thru Nov 15h then nov 22-29th

I really don't know the correct answer but do remember John explaining it at one point...but might have dreamed it
