Squirrel activity

With September nearly here, keep an eye on when the squirrels kick full swing into their fall feeding mode. Here in Northern Pa, they kicked into high gear during the first week of October last year.

With last years debate about a mid September start, I'm curious what others observe to compare notes.

Re: Squirrel activity

It's kind of funny how that was a big debate last year but no attention this year. I was one of those people that wanted an earlier season. RSB is really against it yet many States surrounding us have a September squirrel season. I, for one, think we should have an earlier squirrel opener because I really don't think we have the hunter participation that we had 20 or 30 years ago. I'm pretty sure the squirrel population can handle it considering hawks and owls have much more affect on squirrels than humans do.

The horizon is your starting point.

Re: Squirrel activity

I am perfectly fine with the start date of squirrel season here in Pa. In september there is still a lot of foliage on the trees. It's easier to see them and get a good shot later in the season.

I'd rather be fishing or hunting!

Re: Squirrel activity

I'll bet that when you see the fall feeding activity ratchet up, the lactation period is over, for all but a percentage point of females.

Re: Squirrel activity

Anyone been out...what do you see happening? Here in 3A, the squirrles are becoming more active. As with my observations last year, the first week of October appears to be right on track for full fledged fall feeding activity.
