not a great year

Not seeing much in the way of hard mast or soft mast this year around here..some exceptions being pig nuts, grapes, grey stem dogwood, black haw and autumn olive a few acorns

Haven't found much in the way of apple pear, beech nuts, hickory nut, hawthorn, hornbeam.

Hopefully the coming winter will be kind

How are things looking in other parts?

Re: not a great year

Not too well in McKean. Few acorns, spotty apples.

At my place in Potter we have no apples, crabapples, beechnuts or acorns. Some cherry though. Plenty of birds though!!

The wild grapes seem to be doing well.

Re: not a great year

We were cutting grass at our sportsmen's club this past Sunday and noticed wild grape vines absolutely loaded! Looks like a fantastic year for grapes at least here in Somerset County. There are some hickory nuts in the trees and the apple trees that got some protection from the surrounding larger trees are loaded. The trees in the open are bare. I don't see any acorns though.

The horizon is your starting point.

There are a ton of acorns here.......they are like marbles in my driveway with the ones that are blowing off during thunderstorms....

There is also a ton of soft mast everywhere around here, apples, pears, cherries etc.....

Re: not a great year

Apples around my house are almost non-existent. We had a hail storm that shredded the trees during the blossoming stage. Not seeing many acorns either unless they haven't started to drop yet. This will change the deer patterns for sure where I hunt.
