squirrels

in the past I have had several fox squirrels in my yard. This year I noticed some we're losing their hair and scratching relentlessly. Most have now disappeared. I seen another this morning with very little hair. My question is do squirrels get mange.

Re: squirrels

They can, they also can get infested with fleas which will make them scratch a lot.

Re: squirrels

Squirrels also get warvels during the summer. Warble fly is a name given to the genus Hypoderma, large flies which are parasitic. They are usually found around the neck. I have seen them on rabbits also....

Re: squirrels

whatever it is it appears to be fatal.up to a couple months ago it was nothing to see 6 or 8 in the yard at a time.now I only see one occasionally. A couple had become tame and I could walk right up to them. They are no longer here. In the thirty some years I have lived here I have never seen nothing like this with the squirrels before.

Re: squirrels

Did you call the PGC, if not yu should do so. Each region now has a biologist on station and I am sure they would be interested if there is a problem.

Re: squirrels

Warbles are the larva of Bot flies. They do not kill the host. The antlers you see with almost perfectly round holes in them are caused by the bot fly larva. There have been cases of humans affected by them.

Re: squirrels

16148: early this spring a squirrel came up onto my deck to drink water off the pool cover and I got a good look at him up close. He was bald with just a few tuffs of hair here and there. I never saw this on squirrel either. Wonder if it is something going around in Mercer County right now?
