A few days of chasing turkeys
My wife and I left Tues. evening (4/30) for a few days of turkey hunting/mini vacation. She doesn’t hunt but decided to join me to get away for a few days. Our plan was to spend the first night with friends in Clearfield Co., hunt the morning and then off to Crawford Co. to hunt the rest of the week. After we arrived Tues. evening my friend told me where he saw two gobblers fighting in a field earlier that evening. It wasn’t where I was planning to hunt but having hunted near there before and knowing the area I changed my plans. I decided to drive over there and sleep in my truck (it works ok). I headed out early and waited for the gobbling to start. After 6 a.m. and not hearing anything I started to question what to do. I decided to put the decoy 10 yrds. into the field and sit back in the woods and do some soft calling. After about an hour I hear a gobble and its close. It sounds like he’s in the field but my view in that direction is blocked by a couple of dirt banks. I see movement and he’s sneaking in the woods about 50yds away. Now I’m thinking I need to get turned around to get into position in case he gets closer. I start lowering my gun slowly and look out toward my decoy and there’s a gobbler in full strut with a jake between me a him. The jake must have seen me move and now he’s nervous. When he gets behind a tree I get the gun back up and wait for the gobbler to get to an opening. I shot him at 7:15, what an unbelievable morning. 11 ˝” beard, 1” & 1 1/8” spurs.
We then headed to Crawford Co. Wed. afternoon. and stayed in a cabin owned by another member of HPA. I heard and saw turkey’s the next tree days but couldn’t close the deal. We drove up to Erie one afternoon to do some sight seeing and then had dinner. During our trip I/we saw deer, turkeys, grouse, a black squirrel, 3 foxes (1 was a mother outside her den with pups in a field), a family of raccoons in the creek behind the cabin, and a bobcat. It was a great trip that we both really enjoyed.
I would like to post a pic of me and my turkey but they didn’t come out well.
