Would you shoot a bearded hen?

Had one come in Saturday and spend a few hours in front of the blind. I did not shoot but talked to many guys who said they would have no problem shooting one. Just an opinion poll?

Re: Would you shoot a bearded hen?

I would not in the spring. Beard or no beard she is a hen and most likely has a nest. Fall is a differnt animal. If she isnt the head hen with little ones to show the ropes, i would. Been wanting young hen to mount for my collection just havent chased them much in the fall. Usually bowhunting or waterfowl.

I don't know for sure but most likely I would let her walk.
Part of the spring hunt fun is getting him to gobble and
come in.

I'd rather be fishing or hunting!

Re: Would you shoot a bearded hen?

Like corey said the fun of it for me is working a bird...

Some may say i am crazy or call me a liar but i have let birds live because they didnt talk to me and it just wasnt spring gobbler hunting to ME...

Many hunters think they are super rare but they really arent...i forget the statistics on them but its higher thani ever imagined....

My buddy killed a gobbler in the fall one year..good spurs...obviously a male bird....no beard at all! Dont know how odd that is...

To each their own...one day i might take one....but i doubt it...

Re: Would you shoot a bearded hen?

I will take the first one I see with a truely visable beard. It will be the first and last for me. They are an anomoly. Not as rare as a racked doe or piebald/albino deer, but still not a everyday sight. I have been hunting turkeys since I was a pup and have never had the chance during hunting season.

Re: Would you shoot a bearded hen?

A BIG NO to that one. When shooting a hen you are not only killing her ,but 10 to 12 chicks.

Re: Would you shoot a bearded hen?

I had one on Saturday with a beard about six inches long in front of me and let her walk. Smoked a the big gobbler with her. Thought it was a double beard and was surprised by the little third beard(only one inch long). So I guess my answer would be no.
