blew it in VA

Got out this past Saturday for my first day of turkey here in Va. I didn't get to hunt the opener due to a bass tournament. I hop out of the truck and I didn't even get my gun out of the truck and one is hammering away not even 100 yards from me. So of course I start fumbling, dropping my shells etc...I must of bumped him becase I had to cross a 30 yard field to get set up on the edge and he stopped gobbling after I crossed the strip. There are turkeys gobbling everywhere so I head towards one of the areas of the farm i'm most familiar with and get set up on another one. I work him for about 45 minutes, he would respong occcassionally to my call and every once in awhile to the crows but I knew he was closer each time, he just wasn't hammering back to my calls. I hear him start to drum so I know he is close and I can see him strut over the crest of the hill. Of course he starts to swing right of me and there is a blowdown between us now. I'm able to shift around slowly while he works behin the blow down. He is a littler further than i wanted but still around 40 yards. My body is contorted around and boom...take the shot..he kind of hops up and then is gone. Playing it back in my mind I don't think I let him expose his head from his body. There were several turkeys in the area but this one was a big one. How long would you give before you get back after him?

No worries, get back out after him at your next chance. Afterall, it is called hunting and not killing for a reason...happens to the best of us!
