What would you do...

I'm currently perched on a hillside overlooking a beautiful field where I plan to turkey hunt this weekend. I've been watching the same 4 mature toms for a while this year, and just wanted to see where they're roosting before the opener. I'm watching the toms and 3 hens make their way into the woods. However, there is a tom in the very back of the group who has a MAJOR limp when he walks. Now I'm a hunter but I also do have sympathy for injured game. I feel this should be my target bird Saturday as long as everything goes as planned. By the way, he's carrying about. 9 1/2 inch beard. So if it played out as I'm hoping...would you take him before the healthy birds?

I would take the limping bird over the other birds if I got
the chance.

I'd rather be fishing or hunting!

I would shoot the first bird that I wanted to shoot. Turkeys are tough and the bird will more than likely be fine. I don't know if you have ever seen a serious turkey fight close up, but if you have then you would understand why he probably has the limp. Heck he might not even be limping by Saturday. Good luck!!

Haha no walker, although he def needed one! He kept laying down in the field while the other birds fed. I found where they're roosting, so I'll see what I can do this weekend. Turkeys are one of those animals that rarely do exactly what you want them too though...

Keep in mind that bird will fly.away just as fast as the other birds. And he might in fact be "harder" bird to get because of.him walking" slow"

It wont hurt the population letting hiem walk as well.. itf i hurt my leg that doesnt mean i wont be able to start a family

Re: What would you do...

Nope, I would not take that bird. I plan to eat my turkeys and I prefer to take a healthy bird so as to preclude any chance the meat I get will be tainted from disease or injury caused illness....The wounded bird would be left to fend for himself. The most likely outcome if he's injured is some other predator will feast on him soon enough, but it won't be me. I doubt he'll suffer long.
