Nothing yet here and I've seen 7-8 gobblers hanging out together not far from the house. Did hear them in past years in late Feb and March so maybe soon.
So I found out why my spring kill average is so bad. These guys were right by the house yesterday so I open up the sliding door trying to not be obvious. Pull out a brand new box call just for curiosity to see if I get a response this early in the year. Let a hen yelp rip a couple times and..................they go running the other way!!!! Musta sounded like their mother-in-law....BBbaaahhahaahhahahaha
Guess I won't be needing any of those same shells I've been carrying around the past 5 years this year either.
:surprise2::crying:
Been in the woods nearly everyday since flintlock season wrapped up. Haven't heard a peep yet in Mercer or Crawford county. Saw a dozen longboards hanging out together a week ago.
When we were actively trapping turkeys in January, February and March they gobbled their heads off just about every morning. Even in temperatures of below zero the gobblers would be sounding off.
But by the time gobbler season arrived they might be ten to twenty miles from where they were gobbling on those winter mornings. I figure the reason they don't gobble so much in May is because they are just sick of gobbling every morning by then.
