West Nile virus in turkey research

Anyone else receive a post card from the PGC wanting them to save blood and feather samples from their fall turkey? It seems the agency will send you a vial for a blood sample and instructions for feather collection, along with a prepaid envelope to mail it back in. Sounds easy enough. Better than saving 10 muskrat carcasses for biologists last season. Every time I opened the freezer I wanted to use those rats for trapping bait.

Blood Samples From Fall Turkeys Harvested
: Important! Fall Wild Turkey Serology Study

State Board and RD's

The goal for the serology study is to obtain 200-300 blood samples from hunter harvested turkeys this fall. I am in the process of putting the sampling kits together and shooting for 1000 - 1500 kits to be distributed.

I am hoping to lean on the state boards and RD's knowledge of avid fall turkey hunters in local chapters and collect names and info on a google doc. If you know of anyone that is an avid fall turkey hunter, please provide me their information on the google sheet.

I will be providing RD's with kits to distribute as they are visiting chapters and planning for next years banquet season. My hope is that we can pass out 250 kits to NWTF members who are avid fall turkey hunters. Remaining kits will be mailed using last years harvest report cards from hunters who successfully harvested a turkey in the fall.

The rest of my money I just wasted.

My dad and I both got those postcards last weekend. I responded and they were to mail the stuff out this week. I look forward to see the results.
