May 30th

Went to the same general area as the past two days. The past two days I have had a gobbler close but never heard him today unless he moved a good bit further away.

The first thing that happened was someone came in on the open game lands road, stopping and owl hooting at every good listening spot. They started that nonsense well before gobbling time plus in my experience that is the best way to shut birds up that I know of short of walking under them after gobbling time.

Fortunately though they left after hooting around the all the parking lots. Ten minutes after they left one gobbler gobbled about a half dozen times on the back side of the hill but he was out there a ways.

I kept hoping one of the closer ones would get going but no dice today.

After a couple hours of nothing I took the bike and circled the block of woods where the one was gobbling on the roost calling periodically. Nothing answered.

Finally the rain rolled in and I headed for home.

I'll probably go deeper into the game lands in the morning to see if I can locate one for the last day.

Dick -

Good luck tomorrow for a strong finish! I must have missed it, but did you post a report for your first bird of the season? I was hoping to read about it.

I did harvest one on May 18. I think the story should be posted on that date in the turkey forum.
