anybody use one just for turkey ? ammo, patterns, yardage ? set up, red dot ?

i have been playing with this idea for sometime.

My dad has an H&R single shot that he bought at Bob & Mickey's in Mercersburg, Pa. back in the late eighties.
They were taking them, cutting about a foot off the barrel and resleeving them with a fixed, tight choke. Spray paint camo job and a sling.
Those things were ridiculous....turkeys didn't have a chance, lol.
Too bad you don't live closer (he lives in South Central Pa.), I think he may be looking to sell it. I think he has a case of Federal 4s also.

I have one of the H&R 176's that is still full 36" full choke. Bought it in the early 80's. Killed a couple Spring birds very dead with it and copper plated #4's years ago.

I loaned mine once to a coworker that needed to dispatch a groundhog. He brought it back the next day and said
"I suppose you think that was funny" Which of course I did. Honestly I never thought the recoil was that bad if you had a hold of it. Shot a 3 1/2" 12 gauge mossberg that I thought kicked more. I have a BPS 10 gauge now.

i shot the 3 1/2 inch mossberg ONCE. a friend was selling his and i knew he had killed plenty of turkeys with it. he loaned me the gun and five shells to personally check the patterns for myself. he suggested i start at 35 yards due to the tight patterns that he said the gun was capable of.

i sat down on the ground, just like i was turkey hunting, i aimed at the cardboard box, pulled trigger, it looked like that box exploded it got hit so hard, i almost rolled over due to recoil. i wasnt expecting that much so i really wasnt braced that well (?)

i took the gun and remaining 4 shells back and said no thanks.

if i get a 10 gauge i plan on using a sims recoil pad AND their strap on protective shooting pad TOGETHER

I have a BPS 10ga that's in my rotation. I just shoot regular lead 5 or 6's. It's good to 40. I have a pure gold choke
