Colorado Elk Points

Can somebody tell me how many years you can go without applying for points until you lose them?

Re: Colorado Elk Points

According to the Colorado 2012 preference point annual.
"If you do not apply or hold a license for that species at least once within 10 consecutive years for bear, elk, deer or pronghorn, your preference points for that species will be lost. Applying for a preference point for the species keeps your file active."
Same applies for bighorn sheep, moose, or mountain goat licenses.

Re: Colorado Elk Points

Thanks.

I just never understood why you must pay the price of an elk tag when you only want a point, only to get a refund a few months later. Makes no sense.

Re: Colorado Elk Points

The reg reads - "Points accumulate until you draw a first choice license. If you fail to apply for or have not purchased a license during a 10 year period, all accumulated points for that species are purged from your record and become void."

If you buy a preference point that is considered "applying" and counts toward being active in the 10 year period.

Are you sure your friend didn't have that happen in WY and not CO? He should not have lost his points in CO unless he drew a first choice license. Also keep in mind that even if he had 3 points and put down a first choice that was an area that required zero points to draw, he would lose his 3 points.

You can buy a pref point as first choice and put down a limited unit tag as a second choice and if drawn for your second choice you will keep your points. You can also buy a pref point and buy an OTC license which will allow you to gain another point and also hunt any of the OTC units.

Re: Colorado Elk Points

I have been doing pp myself and i dont think you can go that long in Co. with out loosing them. Wyoming is like 2 years ive been applying pp in wyoming for last 3 years and first year did moose also. Then i thought the heck with moose and didnt apply for 2 years. They actually contacted me and told me if i didnt apply last year i would loose my point. Wyoming you apply for pp only july 1 if you dont want in draw. Yes Co. you have to put money up front but you get it back, and yes they make some good interest off of your money.
