That's not hunting!!!

I was outside Saturday afternoon putting up some Christmas lights and I hear it. A bunch of fools in be woods hootin' and hollerin' to scare the deer. Then there is the resulting onslaught of gunshots from guys "letting lead fly". I know it's a PA hunting tradition but it is so ridiculous. Walking around the woods "driving" deer yelling like an idiot and other guys trying to hit deer running through woods at 35mph. Move ahead one day. Sunday, bringing my daughter back from her play, what do we see but a doe with its back leg blown off. Hanging by a thread of hide. I wanted to put her down but then I'd be the criminal. Kinda ironic isn't it, but the guys letting lead fly shooting up and injuring animals they have no business trying to shoot are okay. Well I hope she makes it but it was a bloody mess and I'm sure the coyotes will get her. I know it's a successful technique because the groups I know that do it get a lot of deer, but at what expense of injured animals? I manage to get my deer every year with acting like a fool or shooting and maiming all kinds of animals in the process. I guess I hunt, those guys just shoot up the woods, deer, and I guess occasionally themselves. Now I've been a part of some silent movement activities to get deer moving out of some super thick stuff but that's usually a two person deal. One stalking through thick stuff and another at an escape route. Please don't tell me it's the same thing but on a larger scale, it certainly is not and those big loud, obnoxious deer drives are a discredit to hunting in general. Yep, I'm gonna make some people mad, but if they all learned to "HUNT" they wouldn't have to "hunt", LOL, like that!!!!

Sitting in a blind or treestand is sitting watching and praying.Hunting is searching for the animals and killing them.

Re: That's not hunting!!!

Your goal is the same as theirs....and that is to move deer. You just go about it in a different manner. You're still pushing deer to a stander/watcher that is going to shoot lead from his gun.

Interesting how you say "they" are "driving" deer and you are "part of some silent movement activities" to get deer moving. That's a classic right there.

When you KILL a deer with a rifle or bow, do you say you caused the deer's premature expiration too?

Re: That's not hunting!!!

In m area at one time every gang regarless of numbers hooped and hollerd. Seems its only been in last few years ive seen silent driving. 2 things to look at, silent or hollering you jump up a deer its going to run or be on the run for the shooter regardless. Second thing look at safety. 3 of us silent drive and at times you just start to see that little patch of orange popping out little by little. There could of been a deer close to one of us in the dips causing an accident. When there is hooping you know where that person is. Different ways to look at it. Ive seen many crippled deer from guys sitting in blinds or stands hunting by themselves. Sad when it happens either way.

Re: That's not hunting!!!

There is a totally complete difference. Is there a difference between someone walking down the street to get somewhere and another person walking down the same street yelling and screaming to get somewhere? You bet there is. Even if their destination is the same, the act of getting there isn't. Secondly by silently walking through the woods everyone within 2 miles can't hear them. Kinda like you in your vehicle listening to your radio and all of a sudden your chest starts vibrating from some punk blaring his radio and bass so everyone else hears every swear word coming out of his system. The same right. Also, silently stalking thru thick cover doesn't send every deer on a death that a bunch of people try to shoot. No, by silently stalking through an area to encourage movement you are just as likely to get a shot at a calm animal as any poster. Not a shot at a deer trying to run out of its own hide. The same right. A deer walking vs running full speed. The same right.
That's okay

Re: That's not hunting!!!

You have your way and they have theirs. But when you have a large group of guys driving safety becomes a factor . At times when I hunt drivers will push thru the area. The yelling lets me know where they are and which direction they are headed. I certainly don't want a stray bullet going or coming my way. This also lets the standers know where they are as the drivers push towards them.

God, Family, Country in that order.

Re: That's not hunting!!!

As long as what they are doing is legal then there is nothing wrong with it. You don't know who shot that doe. It might have been shot before that drive went through there. When I used to hunt gamelands 39 (before most of the deer there were shot off) I hardly ever saw anyone putting on drives and still saw a lot of wounded deer there. So maybe you should climb down off of your high horse and hunt the way you like to and not worry about what other legal hunters do.

Chief - That is called DRIVING deer. Rationalize it however you want. You're doing that same thing they are only using a different method. Both are legal and there is not anything wrong with either method. But stand up and call it what it is and quit trying to separate yourself from the same thing you are doing just because you don't like their method.

Re: That's not hunting!!!

I'm with the OP.I like doing slow silent drives because the deer come sneaking through and more times than not, offer a standing shot at some point.Big loud drives make the deer run and the vast majority of hunters have no business shooting at a running deer.I believe that's the point he was trying to make and I agree 100%.I've killed several dozen deer on drives, mostly as the driver.Never once have I taken a running shot at a deer unless it was previously wounded.
