This deer season has been a rough one to say the least!! Can anyone help me out on how to get a "red tag" and how to go about it, being that I've never done it before. I know I still have two more days of the season but things are looking bleak to say the least.
308, the way that i make out the best on is once the regional office sends you the address of enrolled landowners, I then send them a SASE with a brief letter asking for permission to hunt their property for the redtag period. I can only speak for my area but I've found 1/2 the enrolled properties are enrolled in the "click" fashion (tags for friends and family only), a couple will have a waiting list and then some really don't get hunter participation. LO's are reluctant to give 1st time strangers the physical tag for the fact that if the issue the tag you may only hunt one time (not fill the tag) and never return causing them the problem with not allowing another hunter the possibility of filling the tag. Where I hunt the tags are at a spot on the property, if you need the tag you get from the designated spot. I dont think that this is the way the PGC wants it done but I understand the problem not doing it this way causes the LO. Most LO's will give you a tour of the property and boundry lines (if not self exlanitory). Along with the SASE I give my phone number-just easier for LO to contact you.
Cg- sorry I no longer have the copy(I've been established on the farms I hunt for a while now) just thank the LO for being enrolled in the program and assure them of their most likely respect of property and safety concerns for them and their neighbors. I also give brief hunting backround etc.
