Folks I haven't hunted opening week for the last five years. 35 years prior I enjoyed the excitement of the opener and miss it. My hunting buddies an I decided to start hunting the last week and it has paid off. We generally get to camp on Tuesday of the last week and hunt two private unworked old farms. One is 50 acres and the other around 40. We usually have six or seven guys. The first morning split up and stand and still hunt. Usually one of us finds an area with a lot of sign. We go from their and do slow silent pushes to a couple of standers. This has worked for us over the last five years. We usually get two or three decent bucks. If we do not see deer on private land we move to SGLs and repeat the process. Late season has been cold but we prepare for it. Seems like the second week the deer are most located in the creek bottoms among the hemlocks. They start getting back to their routine habits. Its harder than the opener lots of walking and finding where they are. Very few hunters in the woods so you have to think bedding and food areas. Its a crap shoot but very rewarding when we score. Bottom line is there is a lot of good hunting left.
On the private land to which I have access, the first week is stand hunting only. The 2nd week is stands in the morning and evening, and drives mid-day. The property is not large, so we don't want to push the deer out on week 1. The surrounding properties are hunted hard, so we try to provide somewhat of a sanctuary until week 2.
