Colorado Elk Public land Bow Hunters I need advic

My friends and are a trying to put a trip together for next year. Some want to do elk in colorado with the bow, left over the count tags on public land. I have been weary of this trip in the past from stories I have heard from other hunters that the success rates are low? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Looking at low 20%'s for success rates.

I am headed out for 2 weeks on a DIY archery elk. Will report on my experience.

Building cameras anymore? I'm not.

First trips are usually better when you go with someone who has been there before. Get on a good exercise regiment with a lot of cardio training so you can enjoy the trip.
You can get some good info from the Colorado DOW website, for planning your hunt.

Re: Colorado Elk Public land Bow Hunters I need advic

Here are some suggestions. Go to http://www.bowsite.com/ regional forums Colorado. You will find helpful folks at times, willing to offer advice to NR hunters. First narrow down your search to a preferred unit, read as much as you can on the threads of the Colorado forums or click the elk icon for more specific information on elk hunting. Then ask qurstions. Also, http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ forums also has a wealth of information, see the elk section, or bowhunting section. Normally without resident advice and help, you will need a few years of hunting the unit before you see success. Some newbie's are lucky, and will score thier first outing with resident advice. Talk to the Colo DOW game biologist for your hunting region for additional help. There are folks on here who have first hand experience, who may help you once you have chosen a unit or area in a unit. Please do some research first, before asking for help. To see some photos of promising areas in Colorado, to see the terrain, go to http://www.mycolorado.net. Steven Kilgore's web site. He is not a hunter but has photos and videos of many good elk hunting areas in his selection of areas. Once you have determined your hunt area, go to his web site to see if he has photographed the area of your intrest. I am almost positive you will be hunting where he has already photographed. His photos will allow you to see how rugged and steep the Colorado mountains are. Get yourself in the best shape of your life. Good luck. HH in Pa

Dont go unless you have been working out. Archery is mostly climbing and hiking. Not in shape?....you will never get to them. I have hunted public land many times. The Weminuche Wilderness (sp?) is where I have had my best success. Hunting up at 10,000 to 12,000 feet. Right at and above timberline. GREAt fun. Incredible scenery. VERY physical. The most reward self guided hunts I have ever been on.

Success rate is way lower then 20% with a bow in otc areas. Most are under 10%.I love bowhunting elk and go every year.My best advise would be go to Wy. or Mt.was less hunters and bigger elk
