I don't know. Sleeping on the ground is more comfortable and the deer has a better chance of waking you.

That story on a hunter I knew, deer walking up to a sleeping hunter, made the rounds decades ago.
As for baiting, do some hunters take in so much food into the woods, it would be hard for them to say it was just for lunch, if stopped by a wildlife officer.
