I am interested to know

I am interested to know what others think about this topic, and I don't mean this to be a bashing thing in any way. Many times while reading posts I see where a poster says that he has hunted hard, usually followed by a statement that he has not seen any deer or only a few. I know for a fact that this happens because it has happened to me, but that is not what I'm curious about. How would you define "hunting hard?" If you care to, please describe how a day of "hard hunting" might go for you. Thanks in advance.

Re: I am interested to know

Dark to dark, or however much time you have. Doing what is physically necessary to get your game. Staying mentally focused on the hunt, your mind not somewhere else. Doing it in any weather on whatever days you have available. Essentially, giving it your all and not being lazy about it, physically or mentally. That said there are days I "hunt hard" and other days I take it a little easier to give my brain and body a break.

Hunting as many days as I can, as long as I can ( time permitting, family..work..) in any weather the wild can throw at me. That's hunting hard for me.

Re: I am interested to know

I can't see hunting hard being based on one day. If I'm not worn out, getting sick, and down right ready for the season to end, I didn't hunt what I would call hard.

It's a good spot. Just not today.

Re: I am interested to know

Most years I hunt nearly everyday through archery season. I also hunt different areas. I do alot of scouting esp. during the season because things change so much from early Oct-mid Nov.

I am not a hunter that spends the entire season sitting in a couple different tree stands-I move around and look for differnt food sources, rubs, scrapes etc...

The last couple seasons, I've been lucky and found a buck I liked the first week of the season. But I have shot more the last week of the season than at any other time.

"Hunting hard" is not something I would use to describe a one day hunt.

You don't need to hunt hard.Work harder at getting better areas to hunt.It takes more time than the actual hunting though.I guess I hunt hard before the seasons come in.

Re: I am interested to know

Scouting, scouting, scouting and when that is done scout some more. Put in as many hours as possible with family and work coming in that order before sitting on stand. I watch the wind direction but do not let foul weather stop my hunting. Not to mention practice . . . that is hunting hard for me.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people asking questions.

Re: I am interested to know

Usually still-hunting or driving, ie:"covering ground". Many days covering 5-8 miles. Difficult for me to consider treestand hunting a hard day of hunting. Although, it is very effective and I shot my biggest buck ever this year from a treestand. Not knocking it. If I was, I would be knocking myself.

Re: I am interested to know

I think "hunting hard" is a way over used term myself. If I had to say what "hunting hard" is in the way of Pennsylvania hunting I would say it's putting forth the effort in your scouting to make intellegent choices and then to have made good decisions based on that information "hunting hard" is not in my mind overpressuring the area, hunting areas with the wrong wind conditions, and making poor decisions. I think in whitetail hunting that "hunting hard" is more of a mental thing than physical.

I also think that you can hunt hard by staying in camp when you know that your decision to hunt an area lessens the chances for future success.
