White Tail Brain Abcesses ?

Does anyone read the "Outdoor Wire"? Today they have an article that "I think" it says that brain abcesses in white tails are more or less "normal" due to the process of growing antlers, velvet scraping & rut fighting. Hmmm???

Re: White Tail Brain Abcesses ?

We had a local buck with a puncture hole in the back of its head behind the left antler. It was taken to a local biologist and determined to be from fighting or rubbing.

It's a good spot. Just not today.

Re: White Tail Brain Abcesses ?

SGT Rick,

This is being under played in several states. IMO it is a serious concern particularly when most states have a goal of growing more mature bucks. I've worked on this with my clients for a few years now. Until more research says this isn't an issue, I'm on guard.

I love the quote about how it has been around for a long time. I'm sure it has, but the number of mature bucks (most vulnerable) has never been this high...concern? I think so.
