Deer Sightings Poll (Discussion)

So the poll has been going for several days. Out of 107 votes 71(66%) of you said you expect to see a deer in 1 day! I've been fortunate to hunt a lot of land in other states and it has curved my appreciation for PA hunting. In Mississippi I would got 7-8 hunts before seeing a DEER on public land. In Kentucky 4-7 hunts. In Missouri I could go 3 to 4 hunts, but have gone as long as 10 without seeing deer.

Does this make us PA hunters greedy or were we just spoiled with over populated deer herds the past 3 decades?

Re: Deer Sightings Poll (Discussion)

In Missouri if you are hunting that long without seeing a deer you must be sleeping. I hunt public land out there and almost never do not see multiple deer each day.

I do not think it is greed we just have a great state and a great resource we just need to managed it for our future generations.

There's hunting and there's hunting with a good dog

I expect to see deer because I have some good spots and I
know they are around.

I'd rather be fishing or hunting!

I'll add this to this discussion: If you scout and see very
little deer sign or deer, why would you hunt deer there?

Re: Deer Sightings Poll (Discussion)

If it's all you have to hunt on than I guess you just have
to accept that you will most likely not see a deer this
year. If all I was seeing was very low deer numbers on
public land, it would make me work that much harder at
finding some private land to hunt on. Knock on doors, look
for clubs or camps taking in new members, ask on co-op
farms, etc..whatever you have to do.

I'd rather be fishing or hunting!

Re: Deer Sightings Poll (Discussion)

When my father-in-law and i talk about deer sightings he always tells me about when he was in the one room school house and if someone seen a deer it was a big deal. This was in the 50's in lebanon co. But he would say if you wanted to hunt deer you had to go upstate Sullivan co. He explains of sightings of 50+ deer in one herd and days of seeing 100 deer. Since that time he sees alot of deer around his home and sees little to no deer upstate. The deer have adapted to his local farm lands and he as a hunter has adapted to stay home and harvest a buck every year since leaving the upstate woods.
Deer adapt and we as hunters shall persevere.

Re: Deer Sightings Poll (Discussion)

Today was the first day since rifle season opened that I didn't see a deer and it surprised me. I hunt farmland in Lebanon co. and expect to see deer everyday. On SGL's I don't however.

Re: Deer Sightings Poll (Discussion)

I only hunt public ground, and I see deer pretty much every day. If I hunted 3 or 4 days and didn't see a deer I would definitely be searching for new ground to hunt on.
