Pretty crazy day for me and my group, my good buddy shot a nice heavy eight point about 9 AM and few other guys saw a bunch of deer running across fields from patch to patch but they were all does. We did a few small drives with not much to show for it and I had to leave early so on my way home I decided to stop and due a quick walk through a small wooded patch bordered by two fields and a swamp at one end. The patch is about 150 yards wide and 300 yards long with a four wheeler trail through the middle of it. I was doing a slow walk down the path and was about 2/3 of the way through were the path turns out into the field when I picked up on what looked like antlers. I got it in the scope and saw right away it was a decent buck bedded down about 100 yards ahead of me behind a fallen tree. I had the wing in my face and he was looking away from me so I slowly start my stalk to close the distance using trees as cover. I got to about 50 yards and had to change positions three times trying to get a better angle and clearer shot. I finally got to a small tree that gave me a pretty clear shot but I could only see the back of his head due to the fallen tree so the LONG wait began. To make a long story short I waited him out for an hour and a half. He spent the entire time sleeping and grooming himself. When he did decide to finally get up I had a hard quartering away shot and put it right in the boiler room splitting his heart in half and all but taking off the front leg. He is a real nice eight with an 18” inside spread. First deer I have spot and stalked and it was one heart racing experience to say the least. I was pretty bummed not connecting in archery season but this hunt made up for it. Good luck to all during the last week.
