tracking mystery

My friend shot a buck this afternoon and when he tried tracking it he found white fluid like snot mixed with some blood on the ground. After fifty yards he said there was only a few drops of blood every thirty yards. Does anyone have any clue where he could have hit the buck or what the white fluid could be?
