weirdness

Since I connected in archery, I wont be out tomorrow. I didn't even take the day off. this will be the first time in 34 years I wasn't in stand on the first day at first light. I cant tell you how strange it is:
1. even being up this late.
2. not setting the alarm or waking up early tomorrow.
3. Going to work on the high holy day will be.

I have thought about it and, given my druthers, I'd rather get a buck in archery every year, but since that happens so infrequently, and since I can no longer hunt does on opening day, I'd like to get used to this. But right now it seems like the year without a Santa Claus.

Hunting: 10% skill and 90% location.

Re: weirdness

I hear ya....this is the 3rd time in 15 years that I have to carry a gun, nothing compares to the bow....I won't trade those 10 years gun hunting prior to '97 though

Re: weirdness

It is weird. I have decent success with my bow so I've done this before. Even though I got my buck in archery I'm still on stand this morning. I'm armed with a camera, a camcorder, and a knife (just in case my dad gets one). I was brought up that this was a holy day and I always observe it, whether I got my buck already or not. It's all about the tradition and the comraderie.

Re: weirdness

Getting used to not being out on this day, I prefer it that
way too! Shot a buck in archery season. I do have a doe tag
and dmap tag I could go and try to fill but I have a head
cold so I decided to stay home this morning. For me the
excitement of this day now is seeing how my friends and
family did.

I'd rather be fishing or hunting!

Re: weirdness

Since I began archery hunting a few years ago I have not taken opening day of rifle off. I am okay with that. Where I normally archery hunt and saw three people all season now has over 20 cars parked there when I left for work this morning. No need to deal with that mess of people who hunt 2-3 days each year. I would rather wait until the crowds die down and hunt saturday afternoon since it is usually cleared out by then.

As are the deer. Even if they're not shot, they find a hiding spot where you can't get to them with a cannon.

Depends on the WMU. In some of the Northern "big woods" areas of the State the Deer are back on their normal patterns shortly after the opener.

Re: weirdness

And even in the areas that get pounded that I hunt I am able to find some deer. Those that only show up 2 days a year to hunt during rifle usually hunt the same spots they always do, and they area easy spots to get to. The deer aren't there and they always complain about not seeing deer. Hit the thick spots and scout and you get a pretty good idea of where the deer head to when they get kicked around. The lazy one day hunters don't want to walk to or drag a deer out of where they hide out.

Re: weirdness

Yep. For me hunting season doesn't even start until after Christmas.

True. I hunt the suburbs in Dauphin County. The deer change their patterns totally. They know when they're being hunted. Other times you can not spook deer at all if you're not hunting.
