Still no bucks?

Hmmmm, I found it an interesting, and i must admit, a very dissapointing rutt this past archery season. I hunted at least 20 days in archery and everyday the last 2 wks of the season. I found plenty of does on SGL lands and harvested two w/ my compound, but even seeing bucks were REALLY hard to come by and the "rutt" action was near zero where I was in 4D all the way down to the finish. It just started to pick up a little bit towards the end of archery, I figured it would've been in full swing in the gap between archery and rifle. That is, until last night.....

I was at a friend's cabin helping prep the camp for upcoming rifle season. We saw a group of 8 does, not a buck in the group? Weird for this time of yr.....

Finished up at camp, drove home thru the gamelands where I spend all my time hunting in archery, some rifle and muzzleloader. Counted 3 groups of diff deer in the greenfields next to the gamelands that I hunt, and they had 37 deer in it! Wow, when's the last time you saw that many deer coming out in big groups like that next to gamelands....none more than 100 yards off the road.

I parked and glassed everyone of them easily w/ my HD Swarovskies for the last hr up until dark, not a SINGLE buck anywhere around. Not out in the fields, not hanging inside the wood edges, no where. No spikes, no buttons, no nothing. I was simply stunned....where are the bucks right now?!? I saw 2 legal bucks, one a real dandy, not 300 yards from these deer and they were alive when the final archery bell rang, so unless they got clipped by a car/critter they should still be around. They were nowhere in site. I mean, 37 does?!? How can you pass up that kinda party if you are a buck? Especially even a young, clueless buck?!? I couldn't believe it....

Not good.....not good at all me thinks. In 20 yrs of hunting these parts inside/out, I've never seen it like this ever. Plenty of does around, but the bucks seemed to be gone.

I live to hunt....and hunt to live!

Re: Still no bucks?

Great to see large numbers of does around on SGL, and rest assured the bucks are there too, but smart. The rut started heavy duty the week after archery in 4c area and i saw 3 times the amount of bucks on trail cam that week compared to all year combined and most at night. Sounds like a great area to hunt rifle for sure. Best of luck and thankls for sharing.

Re: Still no bucks?

Saw two bucks yesterday at about 1:30 PM a young six and a slammer eight close together .... the rut is on now and they are moving mid day and at night a lot too.

Re: Still no bucks?

I've seen ONE (1) Buck all year, and it was sublegal. And I supposedly live in Deer nirvana.

Re: Still no bucks?

Probably no hot doe in the bunch rmh181. Was up spotting on the 15th on the mtn. Many doe laying with their fawns. One busted up 8 pt chasing a single doe. Then I came around the corner and there were two 8 pts with a doe. They must have been making some noise (fighting perhaps) because a 10 pt came in ears back, wheezing up a storm and drove the bigger 8 into the ground. They were only 10 yards from the truck. They hardly even noticed me.

The rut is all about the hot doe. Location and timing is everything. This year has been a bit strange but nothing really different. I promise you'll see fawns next year !

It's a good spot. Just not today.

Re: Still no bucks?

Perhaps you are right hightine, but I couldn't help but wonder the odds of all 37 being NOT hot this time of yr?!? Sure the older bucks may be playing it safe until after dark before they come onto the scene, but I would think if you were a young buck, and saw that party standing out in the fields at near dark w/o a buck around, you'd come out and stroll around to make sure they weren't hot.

Granted there was a bunch of 1 yrd old doe in there but a little less than half of those does I saw were solid 2.5-3yr+ old, mature does. You'd think there'd be at least young spikes who don't fully get what's going on chasing them around or lingering near by. That is of course, unless there's a true beast nearby that's puttin' the hammer down on any lil' guys that come by. I tried to tell myself that anyways....

Still, seemed awfully strange to see that many does together w/o a single buck wondering around. Problem for my SGL areas, the posted land around the fields is where these deer are all coming out of and most have been hiding in all archery. If they don't get posted ground hunters in there moving deer around, SGL hunters may see very little come rifle season. I'll be greatful to be up at my buddy's camp come rifle season.

Re: Still no bucks?

I didn't see a decent buck from a stand all archery season and not much chasing except for a few small bucks here and there. This past saturday morning while hunting bear,I had 6 different bucks come by me noses to the ground and chasing does all over the place.Hightine is correct. It's all about having a hot doe or two in the area. The bucks are out there.
