Still no bucks?
Hmmmm, I found it an interesting, and i must admit, a very dissapointing rutt this past archery season. I hunted at least 20 days in archery and everyday the last 2 wks of the season. I found plenty of does on SGL lands and harvested two w/ my compound, but even seeing bucks were REALLY hard to come by and the "rutt" action was near zero where I was in 4D all the way down to the finish. It just started to pick up a little bit towards the end of archery, I figured it would've been in full swing in the gap between archery and rifle. That is, until last night.....
I was at a friend's cabin helping prep the camp for upcoming rifle season. We saw a group of 8 does, not a buck in the group? Weird for this time of yr.....
Finished up at camp, drove home thru the gamelands where I spend all my time hunting in archery, some rifle and muzzleloader. Counted 3 groups of diff deer in the greenfields next to the gamelands that I hunt, and they had 37 deer in it! Wow, when's the last time you saw that many deer coming out in big groups like that next to gamelands....none more than 100 yards off the road.
I parked and glassed everyone of them easily w/ my HD Swarovskies for the last hr up until dark, not a SINGLE buck anywhere around. Not out in the fields, not hanging inside the wood edges, no where. No spikes, no buttons, no nothing. I was simply stunned....where are the bucks right now?!? I saw 2 legal bucks, one a real dandy, not 300 yards from these deer and they were alive when the final archery bell rang, so unless they got clipped by a car/critter they should still be around. They were nowhere in site. I mean, 37 does?!? How can you pass up that kinda party if you are a buck? Especially even a young, clueless buck?!? I couldn't believe it....
Not good.....not good at all me thinks. In 20 yrs of hunting these parts inside/out, I've never seen it like this ever. Plenty of does around, but the bucks seemed to be gone.
I live to hunt....and hunt to live!
