Well just made it home from a 7 day trip to Indiana. 5 of us total ventured out there with high hopes and the chance to hunt some new terrian. Our hunting area was the Pigeon River FWA near Angola, IN. Having never stepped foot in this area I knew it was going to be a challenging hunt. We arrived Thursday evening the 10th prior to the firearm opener on Sat the 12th. We spent all day friday scouting and developing our plans/strategies.
I decided to concentrate my time on a choked out river bottom where I had jumped a big buck while scouting. Saturday, opening morning, I passed a small 6pt and saw 3 does. I felt very encouraged with my morning not knowing the challenges to come. I hunted hard for the next four days only seeing four deer all antlerless. I believe a combination of heavy opening day pressure, warm temps, and a big moon had them holding tight during shooting hours. Finally Wednesday afternoon around 4:45 I notice a doe moving quickly towards me thru some think saplings from my right. Not far behind is a decent 8pt grunting his head off. I let him get to 40 yds where I anchored him with a 250gr shockwave from my TC Omega. Definitely not the biggest buck I've killed but after nearly 40hrs in stand over 5 days and hunting on unknown high pressured public land it surely is one of the most gratifying deer I have killed in a long time. Also for those that think trips like this are out of their reach I did the entire trip (gas, license, lodging, food, beer) for under $600. Also, my buddy Mike killed a nice 7pt Sunday afternoon so we went 2/5 as a group.
Sorry for pic quality but my camera died earlier in the week and all we had was my buddys cell phone.
Thats awesome, your absolutly right I just did the same thing in Iowa while I ended up only killing a doe. I did pass on a 120" ten on the first day (I wish I hadnt) then I screwed up on another on Thursday. either way very satisfying when you can put everything together for an out of state hunt
