Tag in the ear, why?

Can someone please explain to me why the tag must be in the ear? In the majority of other states, its legal to put the tag securely on the antlers. If I shoot a monster buck, I'm not about to put a big hole in the ear and give my taxidermist more work to do. This law needs changed IMO.

this is a dead horse. big hole in the ear? do you carry a drill and a 1/2" bit to get thru that tough skin? use your license holder safety pin to make the hole and then put a wire tie in it.

Re: Tag in the ear, why?

because its the law?

and if your taxidermist is worth a lick, a pin hole won't make a difference. We aren't in Iowa so I wish people would realize that and quit complaining about this one. The old "everyone else is doing it" is getting real old quick. Drew, this is not directed entirely at you, just something that seems to come up weekly anymore!

Re: Tag in the ear, why?

Sorry, I haven't seen the topic elsewhere. I just wondered if there was reasoning behind it? I mean what is the difference as long as it is secure to the animal?

Re: Tag in the ear, why?

don't be sorry, like I said it wasn't a total vent on you! Chances are it was that way because a "ring" type tag would slide right off of a spike buck and obviously a doe doesn't have antlers to secure a ring to? All (or most!) animals harvested should at least have somewhat of an ear left, at the very least. Just a guess!

Re: Tag in the ear, why?

I understand. I mean if you look at a lot of the success pics on here, most people don't abide by the rule if they are going to the mount the deer, so I guess most people share the same view as me. I don't think it's a laziness issue.

Re: Tag in the ear, why?

What happens when most guys go to the processor? Whack the antlers off, and leave the rest. Tag on antlers, tag goes home with hunter. When the wco stops in to check on things, (i.e. properly tagged deer, tag filled out propelry, or even if the deer was tagged) what's he supposed to look at? A carcass with a hole in the head? That probably wouldn't do much good now would it? The tag is supposed to stay with the carcass until it's prepared for consumption, etc. Can't do that if it's tied to the rack in the back of Elmer's pickup eh?

I think I'm an alright guy, I think I'm alright

Re: Tag in the ear, why?

Drew it is not just on here. Has nothing to do with lazy, just people who choose to not follow the law. I'd equate it to doing 70mph in a 55mph zone. Is it wrong, YES, do we do it, some of us. Should we, NO. Humans will always be humans and will tend to push the law over the edge just to see if they can get away with it.

Re: Tag in the ear, why?

And I have been checked by a WCO while doing it that way and there was no problem. Hi 4C!

If I am mounting it, I will not put a hole in the ear, period. Just me but there are many other scofflaws just like me out there....

Re: Tag in the ear, why?

If your taxidermist can't repair a little tiny hole in an ear, you might want to look for another taxidermist.
