Would you put a deer out of its' misery?

If you saw a legal small-racked wounded buck while you were hunting during the antlered season, would you shoot and tag it or continue to hunt for one with a nicer rack?

Re: Would you put a deer out of its' misery?

Interesting topic. I started a similar thread in the archery forum. I saw a protected buck who was injured badly. I let it go. However, the majority (95% or so) said they would have shot.

God Bless the USA.

depends what the wound was and how cold i was at the time. under certain circumstances i would not be against using my tag to put down/harvest a wounded deer

i came across an out of state hunter from NJ on property he was tresspassing on where i was hunting....he open fired at a group of bout 20 doe like a western gunfighter would , then shot at a pair of doe that went between us when we were bout 60 yards apart ....then turned back to shoot at more doe where he started at first....i turned around to see a doe with it's bowels hanging out it's side lay down 50 yards from me, i had to take it out with a head shot then had to turn around and shoot the other deer he hit that went between us ....when all settled down and he came over to me it was all i could do to not punk slap him with my rifle butt across the forehead ....i pointed to the yearling i put down 1st with it's guts hanging out of it and said your deer i finished is over there....then said i'm going to get my deer over there i had to finish off as well he shouldn't have shot at after shooting the 1st one....which turned out to be a huge 180lb doe ....asked him who he was and where he's from then gave him the get your deer and get lost before the owner showed up to see what all the shooting was bout, but he got caught within a few minutes after he came out of the woods....so yes i would put down any deer i had tags for ......bob

Re: Would you put a deer out of its' misery?

That is a very interesting question, I have finished off deer and then called shooter over to claim it. I have also finished off a few deer hit by autos. I know this isn't legal but WCO told me that since he knows I am not a poacher would not cite me.

Me too. It's a shame to see a deer smashed up. My second last deer had a floppy RR leg. Scrawny 6 pointer. Didn't have to think about it more than a millisecond. Got a clean broadside shot at 75-80 yards.
