Been doing some thinking

you know since 1998 we have refrained from shooting a buck unless it exceeded 140 inches well guess what we haven't shot any we used to shoot 3 to 4 bucks 8 points in group of 5 guys evey year with 14 to 17" wide 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 year old buck we also stopped shooting yearlings so no bottons killed well we now see spikes and forks and we never een them in prior years with old regs. i think since we maxed out on doe tags this year were going to try something different forget buck season and just shoot as many as we have tags for of yearlings and if we can see buttons try to shoot just them then in 10 years see if there is any change for better or worse cause right now we see no big bucks and no really even legal buckssomething needs to change a few of us sit out there every day all day for 2 weeks

I think you need to get some kids or seniors in there to take out the lower buck gene pool.

Re: Been doing some thinking

You are being unrealistic with the 140 inch figure. I know that part of the state can produce them, but, this isn't a 16,000 acres of Illinois or Iowa farm country.

250 acres, generally, unless you have very low hunting pressure and like minded neighbors, isn't going to do it. There is also nothing wrong with your genetics. 250 acres is a drop in the bucket. Bucks that are born on your tract disperse 2-5 miles away, and the bucks from those areas filter in to your area.

The gene pool gets well mixed.

X2 You can have all the lofty goals you want but with only 250 acres the natural dispersal effects have "your" deer leaving your property only to be killed by the neighbors. I'm sure your neighbors are happy with your 140 minimum!

Re: Been doing some thinking

You fellas should consider yourselves fortunate that you have private property to hunt. Five hunters on 250 acres is a good chunk but I doubt the Deer are staying on your property. Just hunt and enjoy it and don't set your goals so high. At least you don't have hunting pressure like hunters who have to hunt public property ie. myself.
