I just read in the paper that my school district no longer will have Monday off for Deer season. They made the decision due to the PGC rescheduling the first day of deer season to Saturday. I wonder how many other schools are doing the same?
the school districts should not get in a hurry as this is only a trial run this year. the game commission will determine weither they are going to make it an annual thing. they need to let the kids off on Mondays so they can get an extra day to hunt.
And one of the reasons given for the Sat. opener was so that young hunters would have time to hunt. Now they are losing Mon. Just like some of us said they would.
At minimum, 1/3 of the school districts in PA do not currently have off the Monday after Thanksgiving....
100% are off the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
(And the PGC's stated reason was actually to "Increase Participation in Opening Day"... that was morphed into "It's for the Chirrun" by the public.)
Their spring break will be one day longer or the end of the school year will be one day sooner....unless their allocated snow days exceed what they have set aside...
So pull the kid out of school for a day and she/he will get done school one day earlier, win-win...
surprise surprise. Wasnt one of the complaints for the change as some kids had school on Monday? So the schools that still have off Monday will give the kids 2 days but if they take it away then they have one and your still pulling your kids out of school anyhow. Should have left it alone.
What district is this and what newspaper printed it? I'd be interested in reading the article. Most schools have their calendar board approved and finalized earlier in the year plus these days are usually scheduled off because they are in support staff (custodians, maintenance, etc) contracts as holidays.
With the Saturday opener kids will have a minimum of three unscheduled school days to hunt during the 13 day season. In some school districts the kids will have four unscheduled school days to hunt during the 13 day season.
With the Monday opener kids had a minimum of two unscheduled school days to hunt during the 12 day season. In some school districts the kids had three unscheduled school days to hunt during the 12 day season.
No matter how one looks at it, this change took NO opportunities away from kids/school schedules. In most cases it added opportunities to hunt without interfering with a scheduled school day.
Almost NO districts had school the Monday after T'Giving. See my above post. And the ones that did, do NOT have a student base that cares about hunting.
Great!! They already get Black Friday off so don't need Monday. Shorten the school calendar by one day & save tax dollars!! When Sunday Hunting is allowed...an even more perfect fit!
I don't care for the Saturday opener, but a kid gets that day off, plus they are allowed three unexcused absences right, before they send the cops? Lol.
If it is all about increased Time to hunt then open season a week earlier so everyone can hunt the 3 day thanksgiving weekend.schools are closed as well as most mfg.
My district has always had off Monday and Tuesday of the first week. We currently still have that this year despite the Saturday opener. I have not heard any word about what will happen with those days next year though.
My two cents is that historically schools had off because so many teachers were "sick" and lo and behold, so were half the people in the substitute pool.
Now, with declining hunters, not so much a problem these days.
If mom and dad allow hunting, no harm in missing a day of school. Mom writes a note - Johnny was sick - end of story.
A kid will learn more important life lessons pending a day in the field with a quality mentor that they will in a classroom anyway
The school district my daughter is in has early dismissal on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, they return the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Those days off are labeled as "Winter Break", not "Hunting Season".
A coworkers school district has off starting the Monday before Thanksgiving, they return the Monday after Thanksgiving.
Maybe some school districts use deer season when determining their schedules, but I dont think it is the KEY element in determining most districts schedules.
Our school district stopped giving the kids Monday off about 10 years ago and I would just let my son skip school. I'm glad its moved to Saturday opener and next year should be nice with a Saturday opener and that Sunday being one of the 3 Sundays with hunting allowed.
