We leave for our Newfoundland moose hunt in one month, so the push is on to get everything finalized. The 40-70 Ballard highwall is dialed in out to 500 yards. I need to load a few more hunting rounds and hit the range one more time to make sure the loads are "good to go". I finished the "long range" (200 yard) sight for the .62 cal. flintlock and need to shoot it in. pick up some last minute items and get the bags packed. going to pick up the new cap for my new pick up tomorrow, so I am/we are getting close. the 4th will be here before we know it, can't wait!
Out of curiosity what weight bullet are you running for the 40-70 and do you have an approximate velocity? I’m curious to know how it stacks up compared to something like the .405 Win.
tomorrow I need to fire up the lee pot and cast some .600 rb's for my flintlock and get the new sights sighted in. I really, really want to shoot one with it!
Take it all in, it is a true adventure with the drive up and back, the ferry, meeting people, the locals, camp, the land, the food, ect, ect. Good luck and enjoy!
South/Southwestern part of the island. It’s a fly in remote camp hunt with Effords. We catch his float plane at a pond a couple hour drive from the ferry.
Im heading up the first week of October next year (2020). Can’t wait to hear about and see your experiences the next few weeks on here. Just picked up a Tikka t3 in 300 wm on Friday and am in the process of getting it set up. Good luck!
Have fun! Great people in Newfoundland! We had 6 coolers for one moose last trip, purchased from butcher there. There is a picture in another post here from one of the other guys.
I never drove back with coolers, but my 3 big ice chests I have will hold an elk and a mule deer. So I feel confident they would suffice for a bull moose.
As we flew, we had butcher pack up moose meat in their styrofoam boxes that got freighted home. I got in the habit of leaving ground meat there for the guides. I can get all the ground venison I want here in Pa., and never saw much difference between ground moose, elk or deer meat. Steaks are a different story....IMO....moose is far superior to venison and elk. A couple years I hunted twice and the guides took the whole second moose. Saved me butcher fees and shipping.
The odd thing about bears in Newfoundland...we only ever saw them midday. They came out to eat huckleberries on sunny afternoons. I never saw any early morning, evening, as you would expect here in Pa. If there aren’t any berries, sightings go way down.
When a bear gets himself out in the middle of those big berry patches, they’re not hard to move in on. Just keep the wind in your favor.
Two bulls down. My cousin got a stud. I got a smaller one with my bow and blew an easy shot on a 500lb bear after a 1.5 mile stalk up a mountain. Picts and stories to come.
Pack the truck tomorrow and ready to go!!!! Taking some walnut lumber with me for the fellow woodworker that guided us two years ago. He lives in Buchans and we will be close, so he'll be pumped.
Bring some heat home and lots of pictures, Good luck.
