Ballistics help

Dear Abby,

My DIL shoots a 30-30 using 150 grain bullets.

Today we sighted her rifle on dead nuts at 50 yards.

I thought I could use a ballistics chart to calculate where her bullet would hit at 100, but apparently, I am not smart enough to do that, (my wife would say she knew that)..

Anyway, if anyone has a thought on the answer to that question, I would appreciate it.

Signed,

Apparently dumber than I thought i was.

I prefer my kid hunt and fish rather than steal and deal,

I used to sight my 270 in at 25yards at an inch high and it would be about the same at a 100 yards thats with out any ballistics known worked ok back in the 50s and 60s.

MV at 2300fps for 150 gr. Round nose bullet with zero at 50yards would be about 0.5 inch low at 100 yards. 3.0 inch low at 150 yards and 8.0 inches low at 200 yards.

Well, unless she's going to be taking shots beyond visual range on radar she is most likely good to go considering 90% or more of the deer in Pa meet their maker at 35-50 yards but just for S&G....

The following is a ballistics chart in table format that details the bullet trajectory of a 30-30 Winchester 150 grain HP X30301 and a ballistic coefficient of .218 with a stated muzzle velocity of 2390 fps

1 1/2" high at 100 yards would allow her to use a center chest hold on a whitetail to 250 yards, which will be about where she'll wanna limit her shots to.

That would equate to 1" high at 50 yards.

I use charts all the time for shooting long range , but there is a lot to it. For what your doing the best thing to do is just shoot the gun at both 50 and 100 yards and see for yourself. Short ranges calculations are hard to do. I believe in sighting everything in at 100 yards and taking it from there. If there would be a 1/2" or 1" difference how would you know if its the gun or shooter? I dont want to start a P contest but i would not be shooting a 30-30 over 150 yards anyway.
