not typically a headline for a deer hunting story. However its the only way I can describe what happened today. 2 yrs ago I took Uncle Ken with us to Ohio. He has MSA and has a very hard time getting around. in my mind that was the last year he would really hunt. fast forward to this year and he joined us for the New York opener. The day before his son and I set a blind for him. it was a solid 3/4 of a mile thru swamp land and we weren't sure he would get there. That night we parked in a handicap spot for dinner and I watched him walk the short distance to the door. He used a cane and struggled on flat even pavement. I lay awake that night thinking we made a terrible mistake. But there was no place closer he could have hunted and I did not know what to do. He said he would make it. He was determined. The next day he started walking in. It took quite a while but he made it. He sat all day and saw one spike. His excitement was that of a 12yr old on his first hunt according to his son who sat with him. Although he had no shot he relished the moment and the surroundings. This morning it was pouring rain and he delayed going in till it stopped. He again made the long sloppy hike into his stand. at 2pm today he saw a buck 100yds away walking thru. He was able to harvest it. I am pretty sure it is his best buck. For sure and adventure none will forget. In this day and age of big bucks and passing bucks the size was a bonus. To see this man who was a logger, saw mill operator and woodsman his entire life over come his debilitaed state is inspiring. No $400 hunting coat. No fancy gun. just some old orange and his 308 he bought in 1964. And a old thermos. And most of all the will power to do it.

Great story, great hunt. Very nice deer. I'd never pass that up. Better than I've taken.
