Western mule deer/antelope hunting

Hi All,

I'd like to hear from some of you who have hunted out west for these two species. I have an interest in getting out there maybe this coming October/November (I know, it's probably a little late for booking maybe?) to hunt. I don't know much about what is involved, I just realize that many areas are lottery only and some areas you can just call an outfitter up and it's taken care of for you. So basically, I'm asking how to even go about this and what some of the first steps would be to hunting out west. Are there recommendations for good outfitters, good do-it-yourself hunts on public land, etc? States? Prices? Any kind of introductory info is appreciated.

You Might want to put your post in the Outfittersr & guide forum

Check out the Hunt Talk forums at https://onyourownadventures.com/hunttalk/ one of the best forums for public land DIY hunts that I know of. Very smart people over there. If you're looking for a trophy this year an outfitter is probably the way to go. If you're just looking to hunt and have an enjoyable experience without needing a trophy animal DIY is the way to go.

Horrible winter out west this year. Winter kill will be very high. I would keep that in mind if you are planning a trip next fall and try to avoid the worse hit areas.
