Glad I got a nice one on opening day. (A 6-point with 23 inch main beams; he field dressed 190 pounds.) I cut my own deer up and I don't like to shoot another until one is put away, so I got only a few hours in the rest of the first week. This week I can't rustle up a doe. I've been hunting the Akeley Swamp (State Game Lands #282) in Warren County, using my Savage Model 220F 20 gauge, since I've never shot a deer with it and my shots there will be under 100 yards.
Yesterday the wind was all bad, but today it seemed pretty good so I got in early hoping to find one heading to bed. There is some real thick stuff there -- most of it is pretty much a sanctuary, either too thick or too wet to get into.
No luck filling a doe tag, and I'm finished for now until flintlock season. Other responsibilities take over the next couple of days.
Good luck to all.
