338 Federal strikes again!

Last evening was great! Got out of training round noon so headed to my spot after a quick stop at Burger King for some lunch. I was in my stand around 1:45. Squirrels were working overtime on the forest floor. Round 3:45 I noticed movement along the field edge 60yds away, doe and her fawn. Doe felt something wasn't right so she went back into thicket and the fawn(bless her heart) came and was eating in the cut cornfield at 12yds. Sweet, a decoy! Bout 20 minutes later the field started filling up with does and fawns. Round 4:30 a spike came into the field and started running the doe around. I thought there's no way a mature buck is gonna stand for that. Round 4:45 spike ran most of the doe over the ridge in the field. Round 4:55 I saw a lone deer come out into the upper corner of the field about 80-85yds away. Most of the upper corner is blocked by tree limbs so I thought it was just another doe. The more I watched it feed around the more I noticed something moving on top every time it moved its head. Up went the rifle and I scoped its head to see 3 up points, legal rack buck. I start looking for openings in the limbs and start watching my watch. At 5:00 I noticed I had a clear shot at his neck. I start squeezing the trigger and the Ruger barked and the buck dropped. I lowered all my gear and walked up to a very nice northern York Co buck. As I'm there admiring him I noticed a scar that was healing above his right shoulder. I start examining it and realize I just shot the buck I hit the last week of archery season in the infamous "dead zone" and never found! I was elated to know I dropped the buck I wounded. Once I was done giving thanks to the man upstairs the work began.

Pic of him b4 they cut the cornfield

I thought once I got his hide down where the arrow was it would be full of pus, nope! The only way I knew I hit him was from the scar on his hide!

Yeah, after seeing the field pic of him and knowing how skinny he was when I walked up to him I was really glad myself.

Re: 338 Federal strikes again!

This is only a 338 Federal(necked up 308 casing) so I don't even feel any recoil. This rifle right now is rivaling my 25-06 as my favorite rifle! I've shot 2 buck(1 was in Va) and 3 doe(all where in Va) with it this year. Of the 5 deer only one went 30yds and that's cause she was at a slow walk and I didn't feel comfortable taking a neck shot, the other 4 dropped where they stood!
