Second choice WMU?

If you want a second (resident) doe tag, and all the WMUs near your home are sold out by the time that round arrives...

Where will you apply?
What will you base your decision on?
Will it be the next closest WMU that has tags?
Where you know someone and can hunt with him or her?
Will you hunt private land, or public?
What distance are you willing to drive?
Will you choose an area that has little hunting pressure? Remote area? Urban area?

I'm asking because I'll have no chance at a second tag in the areas I normally hunt. Not sure I'll apply for a second tag, but I'm wondering how others decide where they'll go.

Steve.

Re: Second choice WMU?

My unit (2D) always has second round. But if I did have to send for another unit, I would base my decision on whether or not I had a place to hunt there and how much time I would have to hunt it.
If it was just a "maybe I'll get to hunt one day" thing, I wouldn't even bother sending.

Re: Second choice WMU?

Like kudu my 2nd area always has available tags. But in that situation I'd first look if an available WMU has an area I've hunted before or that I'm somewhat familiar with and has access. If that's not an option I'm always open for a 3 day adventure somewhere I haven't hunted before. So I'd look at SGL's and State Forest's and Parks in a region and give them a go.

My family drew 3B first. Now I'll try for 5 5D tags and maybe 2 5Cs

Sent for a 2F first. I'll send the second round for a 1A. I should get one. If not, one's enough.

“did you get all that on camera sport?”

Re: Second choice WMU?

I got a DMAP in 3D, sent for a doe tag for 3C where I plan on taking a doe to give to the older gentleman who got me permission to hunt a big chunk of private land and I will apply 2nd round of 3D to use incase I need to take a doe on last day outside of the DMAP area.

Re: Second choice WMU?

Can't help you much as I hunt 2A, so getting all 3 doe tags is not an issue.

If it wasn't available in 2A then I would likely not get another tag as I don't have any spots to hunt in other WMU's. I would probably go buy an Ohio license and hunt over there.

Re: Second choice WMU?

Where I hunt in 5A and 5B, there are tags left for the second round in both. But I always send for 5A in the first round, which I did and it was awarded, and then for 5B in the second. But, if I did have to choose a different area for the second, it would probably be either 5C or 3C.
