6 plead guilty to poaching 18 deer

SPRING GROVE, Pa. (WHTM) – Six people in York County must pay more than $23,000 in fines and costs for illegally killing 18 white-tailed deer.

The six, all of Spring Grove, were sentenced after pleading guilty to shooting does and bucks, including a 9-pointer, during a four-month poaching spree in Jackson Township that began in September and continued into the regular rifle season in December, according to a news release from the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

They were also guilty of being in possession of two additional unlawful deer.

Amy Daugherty, 44, Jennifer Rosenberry, 41, and a minor waived their rights to hearings and pleaded guilty to five counts of unlawful taking of big game, four counts of shooting on or across highways, three counts of unlawful use of lights while hunting, three counts of unlawfully spotlighting during rifle deer season, two counts of using a motorized vehicle to locate game or wildlife, two counts of possessing a loaded firearm in a vehicle, two counts of false or fraudulent statements on reports, one count of using a rifle during archery season, and one count of unlawful taking or possession of game or wildlife.

They were ordered to pay $7,650 in fines plus court costs.

Cain Rosenberry, 30, Joshua Runkle, 21, and another minor pleaded guilty to 10 counts of unlawful taking of big game, eight counts of trespassing on private property, eight counts of unlawful use of lights while hunting, seven counts of shooting on or across highways, five counts of unlawful taking or possession of game or wildlife, five counts of unlawfully spotlighting during rifle deer season, two counts of failing to report big game kills within 10 days, two counts of false or fraudulent statements on reports, one count of using a motorized vehicle to locate game or wildlife, and one count of possessing a loaded firearm in a vehicle.

They must pay $15,650 in fines and turn over the gun they used for most of the illegal kills.

According to the Game Commission news release, the first reports of poaching in the area came in the second week of the regular rifle season. As many as 17 deer had been killed by that time.

Wildlife conservation officers searched the Daugherty home Dec.18 and seized multiple guns, bows and crossbows, hunting equipment, skulls, antlers, hides and meat, along with a Dry Erase board with a tally of each person’s deer kills.

Over half of the animals were killed at night or out of season, using lights, from the highway. Some were taken on private property where the six had no permission to hunt, and several were tagged with Maryland tags, according to the news release.

A total of 20 unlawful deer were harvested by all parties involved, including several tagged with Maryland tags.

Re: 6 plead guilty to poaching 18 deer

Hats off to all involved in reporting, catching and prosecuting these poachers.
One note however. We have to love our judicial system.
$23,000 fine for 6 people for killing 18 deer.
$23,000 divided by 6 = $3,833.
$3,833 divided by 18 = $213.
This means each person was fined $213 for each deer killed.
Just saying.

Re: 6 plead guilty to poaching 18 deer

They were fined for each deer they killed because not all participated in each one. That equals out to $1277.78/deer And they had to forfeit their guns in this case to get the plea deal.

Can you believe the idiots kept a tally of the kills on the dry erase board, and that wasn't the first thing erased when the pgc came knocking?? Lol. Morons.

Kudos to the WCO's that wrapped up that case. Whatever the sentence and fine was, it was not enough. And as a side note, anyone who keeps track of illegal killing needs to get what they got coming to them..

Two ladies involved too? Nice going girls, pay those fines, learn those leassons and knock it off.
