I'm looking to buy an older 336 in .35rem. The price's seem to be high, why??

I dont own any 336's but have handled a ton of them years back when I was working in a local gun shop. They always seemed like very well built guns and we sold two Marlins to every Winchester 94. I have read alot of claims about the newer ones being junk and/or not as well made as the pre Remington guns. I have handled a few of the newer guns that were made by Remington and personally I havnt seen anything that I would consider lower quality? The fit and finish seems the same as any other Marlin that I have ever handled. What exactly is it about the new ones that makes them lesser quality guns; metal strength, manufacturing tolerances, parts tolerances, accuracy, function, ect? I understand that the JM stamp has a collectors following, but what makes the Remington guns lesser quality?

Good luck, Tony

Yeah, check out the Marlin Owners forum, but there were a bunch of complaints that surfaced, right after they switched to Remington manufacture, about the guns coming with rust on the internal parts.

Also, while ammo is scarce now, Hornady always puts out a bunch of it's LeverEvolution every year ahead of hunting season. Just snap it up next August/September.

I'm kind of a Marlin lover myself, and I belong to the Marlin owners site.
There were many problems with the Marlin levers when they were first bought by Remington. The 2010-2011 guns were questionable. I looked for a stainless guide gun for sometime, handling upwards of 15 guns, I saw terrible wood to metal fit, rough finish on metal, horrible checkering, and very crooked sights. That being said, I bought a 2014 model stainless guide gun that is beautiful, put together great, and very accurate. They are getting better for sure! If you can find a JM stamped 336 in 35 Rem, in nice shape, for under $450, I'd buy it. Don't worry about ammo, there's ammo out there. They are only going up in price because they don't make them anymore, so they're more desirable to buyers. You can still find deals on JM's , but it's getting tougher. Good luck!

I handled a new Marlin 336 carbine with a laminated stock recently. Metal finish reminded me of a Remington 700SPS, kind of a parkerized feel and look.
I believe you are right but they are using a black oxide type finish like on the newer H&R Handi rifles. Myself, I like blued/walnut stocked guns, like the older 336 and 1895 Marlins had.

I've bought from gunbroker, but not used. Check their return policy many will give you a 3 day no-fire inspection and if you have to return it you're just out the shipping. Ask questions before bidding. As for ammo you can find it at some gun shows and auction sites like gunbroker, but like all ammo now prices are high. There is rumor on the net that remington is no longer going to make the 35 but it has not been confirmed by remington that I could find out. Hornady ammo is popular and they have a history of supporting cartridges for lever guns. With the cost of ammo it pays to reload and components can be had with time and research and checking locally.

I purchased a used Ruger M77 .243 off Gunbroker and it shoots like a champ, no issues. Pay attention to the sellers feedback section. If they have a significant amount of positive feedback they are usually reliable. I would be cautious of sellers with only a few sales and limited feedback.

Just for reference guys, I dug my JM stamped Marlin 336 .35 Rem out of the safe for a few pictures.

As you can see in the one pic - the JM stamp is inscribed within an oval near the receiver on the right side of the gun.

I believe this gun was manufactured in 1976.

I acquired this gun about 5 years ago in a trade and have only shot it a few times...I really like the gun and it's definitely top-notch quality. Topped with a Leupold 2-7 shotgun scope.
