AR10/308 optic.....

Picked up a PSA PA 10 yesterday in .308. 18" stainless barrel, midlength gas. Free float tube in the very near future, probably something with M-lok or keymod slots. Gonna put a low-profile gas block on it, with a set of flip up BUIS.

Looking at optics for it. SWFA has some really attractive package deals with an optic, a mount, and usually a couple AR15 Pmags included. Leaning towards a Leupold VX-R 1-4x (I believe) with a 30mm tube and firedot reticle. There are a lot of other really reasonable, feature packed scopes out there, in the 1-4x, 2-7x, even 3-9x ranges, under the $500ish I'm thinking of spending.

Any suggestions? Ideas? Experience to share?

Re: AR10/308 optic.....

I would be looking for something in the 2-10x40ish range for a scope. Leupold, Nikon, Vortex ect make target/tactical scopes in that price range. A couple months back I purchased a Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44 with the ilum MRAD reticle. I really have not had a chance to string it out, but I will say the scope looks and feels well built and the optics are pretty good. You should also take a look at the SWFA SS line/brand of scopes. As for a mount, I like the lever lock type quick release one piece mount/ring combo by Larue and American Defense, with the nod going to AD just because of scope height.

As for a low profile gas block. If your rifle came with a fixed A2 front sight you already have a low profile gas block. All you need to do is cut it off and mill it down with a file or dremel tool. It will be hid by your free float rail and will be rock solid. Good luck, sound like a fine rifle.

Re: AR10/308 optic.....

Thanks for the input on the scope and mount. The more I've thought about it, the more I'm leaning towards a 3-9 or compact 4-12x.

I've done the "cut down FSB" with AR15s. It's a fine idea that works great. Only issue I have with that is that at some point I may decide that I'd like a fixed front sight on the rifle again. I could just order a replacement, but they don't come drilled for the taper pins. So I figured I'd just pick one up and hang on to this one.
